National Trust, Sutton Hoo -
Illustrations of Archaeologists
The Brief:
Sutton Hoo were looking to add some new interpretation to our dressing up areas for families in both the Exhibition Hall (Anglo-Saxon) and Tranmer House (archaeologists) as part of which the National Trust wanted to include some illustrations of people wearing complete outfits to show how the different elements fit together, if visitors want to follow this a guide/ to help add context but of course they can style their outfits as they see fit!
Based on the dressing-up clothes for children in Tranmer House, NT, they identified 8 characters that they wanted to be illustrated, taking Basil Brown as an example.
Some of the characters are real/ identifiable characters and for those people, the illustrations have to be pretty spot on/ recognisable as those people. For the other two, there is more creative flexibility to hopefully show that anyone can become an archaeologist.
Nation Trust Sutton Hoo liked my illustrative style from the Rendlesham Revealed video of line drawings with dots, but add some more detail to make those real characters in particular come to life.

Results
8 Illustrations were framed and hung on the wall and framed within Tranmer House at Sutton Hoo. The illustrations are jointly with the children's dress-up area, accompanying the fancy dress ideas.
The illustrations also co-insided with Time Team being onsite Sutton Hoo for the 2025 illustrations, this was a great project, as Mick Aston was a Time Team archaeologist. (Left image above)
